1 Gracie Square is one of the finest East End Avenue buildings and is located on the Southeast corner of 84th Street and East End Avenue. Historically, the site was a tenement converted to a single family home where Mrs. Elizabeth F. Howard lived. The building was designed by the renowned architects Rosario Candela, Bottomley, William Lawrence, Shreve and Lamb, and originally had 11-room full floor layouts, 8-room simplexes, 6-room duplexes and triplexes. Mrs. Howard had a special 11-room duplex which was later converted into two units. Other multi-floor units were later subdivided into simplexes. Most units have wood burning fireplaces. Built by Anthony A. Paterno, plans were filed in December 1928, construction began in 1928 and was completed in August 1929. This full-service, white glove building has a 24-hour doorman and an elevator attendant. Located next to the peaceful Carl Shurz Park, East End Avenue is an oasis from the busier parts of Manhattan.
